WHO IT’S FOR

Pediatricians, family physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants

Childhood trauma is more common than most clinicians expect — and its effects reach far into a patient’s future. This course teaches you to detect and respond to trauma in pediatric primary care, with practical tools grounded in the latest evidence and designed for the realities of a busy practice.
Faculty include both a mental health professional and a pediatric primary care provider, so every session connects clinical science to real-world application

Like all REACH training, this course is built on adult learning science. It has two components:

  • A full-day interactive workshop focused on building knowledge, skills, and confidence in addressing youth trauma.
  • Four follow-up case-based group calls — one hour each — where you present cases from your own practice, get expert feedback, and strengthen your skills over time.

Participants can earn up to 11.25 CME credits for both components.

COURSE GOALS

After this course, you’ll be able to:

Differentiate between adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and traumatic stress.

Detect and respond to trauma in older children and adolescents.

Implement the Care Process Model for Pediatric Traumatic Stress.

Distinguish between trauma-focused and trauma-informed evidence-based treatments.

Apply trauma-informed pharmacologic principles in your practice.

YOUR Questions Answered

Everything you need to know before you register.

Who is this course designed for?

This course is built for pediatric primary care clinicians — pediatricians, family physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants — who encounter trauma in their patients and want practical, evidence-based tools to detect and respond to it confidently.

Do I need prior trauma training?

No prior trauma training is required. The course builds knowledge and confidence from the ground up, with faculty from both mental health and primary care backgrounds supporting clinicians at all experience levels.

What will I be able to do after this?

You’ll be able to differentiate between ACEs and traumatic stress, detect and respond to trauma in older children and adolescents, implement the Care Process Model for Pediatric Traumatic Stress, and apply trauma-informed pharmacologic principles.

What is the Care Process Model?

The Care Process Model for Pediatric Traumatic Stress is a structured, evidence-based framework that guides primary care clinicians through screening, assessment, and intervention for traumatized children — giving you a clear, repeatable clinical pathway to follow.

How is the course structured?

The course has two components: a full-day interactive workshop on detecting and responding to youth trauma, followed by four one-hour case-based group calls where you present cases and receive expert coaching.

Is this course offered virtually?

Yes. Check current course dates for available formats and schedules. REACH also offers this as a private training for groups of 15 or more — visit our Group Training page to learn more.

How many CME credits will I earn?

Participants can earn up to 11.25 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™, 11.25 ANCC contact hours, or 11.25 AAPA Category 1 CME credits by completing both the workshop and the follow-up calls.

How does this differ from the PPP?

The PPP is a comprehensive 3-day program covering the full range of pediatric mental health conditions. This course focuses specifically on trauma — going deep on detection, response, and trauma-informed care in a single focused day.

What is the cancellation policy?

Cancellations made 20 or more days before the course receive a 90% refund. Refunds decrease on a sliding scale closer to the course date. Transfers to another session are available within 12 months of registration
