CBT Depression in PPC

WHO IT’S FOR

Pediatricians, family physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants

Primary care clinicians are often the first to notice depression in children and teens. This course teaches you to use cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) techniques with depressed young patients, so you can act confidently within your practice rather than waiting on a specialist.
Faculty include both a mental health professional and a pediatric primary care clinician, grounding every session in clinical evidence and practical reality.

Like all REACH training, this course is built on adult learning science. It has two components:

  • A full-day interactive workshop focused on building knowledge, skills, and confidence in using CBT for youth depression.
  • Four follow-up case-based group calls — one hour each — where you present cases from your own practice, get expert guidance, and put your learning to work.

Participants can earn up to 11.00 CME credits for both components.

COURSE GOALS

After this course, you’ll be able to:

Identify the core components of youth depression.

Screen and assess for depression and suicidality in a primary care setting.

Apply evidence-based CBT techniques with children and teens experiencing depression.

Manage depression in practice — or serve as an effective bridge while patients await specialist care.

Recognize when to refer to a mental health specialist.

YOUR Questions Answered

Everything you need to know before you register.

Who is this course designed for?

This course is built for pediatric primary care clinicians — pediatricians, family physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants — who see depressed children and teens in practice and want evidence-based tools to help them now.

Do I need prior CBT experience?

No prior CBT training is required. The course builds your skills from the ground up, with faculty from both mental health and primary care backgrounds to support clinicians at all experience levels.

What will I be able to do after this?

You’ll be able to screen for depression and suicidality, apply CBT techniques with depressed young patients, manage cases within your practice or serve as an effective bridge to specialist care, and know when to refer.

Is it really possible for me to use CBT skills in a 15-minute primary care appointment?

Yes, you can teach CBT skills to your patients in “bite-sized” chunks during brief appointments. The training focuses on realistic and practical skills that can be delivered in primary care settings.

How is the course structured?

The course has two components: a full-day interactive workshop on CBT for youth depression, followed by four one-hour case-based group calls over which you present cases from your practice and receive expert coaching.

Is this course offered virtually?

Yes. Check current course dates for available formats and schedules.

How many CME credits will I earn?

Participants can earn up to 11.00 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™, 11.00 ANCC contact hours, 11.00 ACPE contact hours, or 11.00 AAPA Category 1 CME credits by completing both course components.

How does this differ from the PPP?

he PPP is a comprehensive 3-day program covering the full range of pediatric mental health conditions. This course focuses specifically on CBT for depression — going deep on one condition in a single focused day.

What CBT techniques will I learn?

The course covers core evidence-based CBT techniques for youth depression, including behavioral activation, cognitive restructuring, activity scheduling, and coping strategies — practical methods you can begin applying with depressed patients right away.

What is the cancellation policy?

Cancellations made 20 or more days before the course receive a 90% refund. Refunds decrease on a sliding scale closer to the course date. Transfers to another session are available within 12 months of registration.
